Now that the weather has finally improved and there are no more signs of snow (thank God!), I can tell you what I’ve started doing to shed some pounds.
First, juice it!
I know this may sound crazy to some people, but I pay about a lot per month to have 32 fresh, organic and cold-pressed vegetable juices delivered to my home. I just don’t have the time to go out and get the veggies, wash and cut them, juice it and store everything for later (and then deal with the garbage). It’s much easier to just have them deliver the fresh juice every 3-4 days to my doorstep each morning. They pick up the old glasses and drop off new ones filled with your favourite juice concoctions. And there are lots to choose from – literally hundreds of varieties. Having done it for about 2 months, my favourites are: standard green, green + spicy, watermelon (for dessert), cantaloupe (dessert), anything that is beet based but not the half green / half beet juice, pineapple + activated charcoal. I use the Raw Juice Guru. They have funny names for their juices like “Green Lemonade”, “Love Your Liver”, “Powerful Greens”, “King Kong Kale”, etc. If you’re looking for a meal supplement or replacement, I’d highly recommend juicing. You can do it for a re-boot (where you drink like 2-3 litres of juice a day instead of food for a few weeks) or you can simply do what I do and have 3-4 per day (that’s about 1.5-2 litres) instead of having an actual meal. Your body will thank you. You’ll lose weight, have way less gas, and have way more energy. Try it and let me know what you think!
Second, get out there and walk/jog!
Part of the reason we are doing our first ever Toronto Marathon event (we have a private tent for dentists, their families, and professionals supporting dentists) is to give ourselves a goal. Something to work towards. So my goal was to do 10 km. And I started slowly doing jogs that would build up to that. But then I realized that 10 km was likely too much too soon for me – particularly because Winter just ended and I’ve got some extra weight to shed. So I’ve been taking advantage of the great weather (recently) and getting out there to do 4, 5, and even 6 km runs around my house. Just put some tunes on your phone, plug in, put on your best ASIC shoes (which you can pick up at the Running Room) and get out there. I’d also highly recommend picking up a copy of Chi Running – the techniques you’ll learn from reading this book will allow you to go long distances in an almost effortless manner. But you will need to retrain your brain on how to run again!
Third, blend work and fun!
We do this a lot at DMC. Last weekend, for example, we hosted a group of established dentists at our 2nd Annual Niagara Falls Winery Tour Event. The weather was fantastic. So was the company, wine/beer/tequila, and company. While this was a lot of work, we felt it was very rewarding to introduce dentists to each other in a fun, social context. At DMC LLP, we also do some other interesting things, like monthly team events. Last month, we participated in an Escape the Room event. We also, courtesy of one of our clients, had a great lunch at the Asian Legends restaurant. We’ve done other things together, like going to Niagara Falls, a play (courtesy of Gary Marcus’ son), Canada’s Wonderland, travelling to Jamaica to participate in our annual dental outreach program, etc. And I would encourage you to find ways to blend the personal and the business; it makes life more fun and interesting. Go and enjoy!
Remember: it’s never too late. Get out there and as they say “Keep Fit and Have Fun!”
